OCEANO, San Luis Obispo County (AP) — The stays of a U.S. Marine shall be returned residence to California’s Central Coast almost seventy four years after he was killed in a bloody World Warfare II battle within the Pacific.
The stays of Pfc. George B. Murray can be flown from Hawaii to Los Angeles on Wednesday and buried Friday with army honors in a cemetery in Arroyo Grande, close to his hometown of Oceano in San Luis Obispo County.
Murray was simply 20 when he was killed on Nov. 20, 1943, as Marines landed towards robust Japanese resistance on the island of Betio within the Tarawa Atoll. About 1,000 Marines and sailors died and greater than 2,000 have been wounded within the battle.
The Protection POW/MIA Accounting Company says stays situated in 2010 have been lastly recognized as Murray’s via DNA.
